The
Leicester City Community Safer Sex Project seeks to keep up to date with the
needs of young people by continuing to ask them about the issues that affect
their lives. Culture and religion in relation to young people’s sexuality and sexual
health are particularly pertinent given that Leicester has a high proportion of
BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) communities.
It is a priority of the project to better engage with these communities,
thus we decided to make a film and toolkit around the difficulties young
British Asians in particular face around talking about relationships and sex.
In conjunction with Leicestershire county council,
we started the film project in July 2012, with the idea that it would be 100%
young people led. Mike came on board as part of De Montfort University’s Square
Mile Project as the cameraman and ended up being an assistant director as well
as editing and producing the entire film! The film has taken a lot longer than we anticipated
and has taken up a great deal of Mike’s free time, particularly his precious
weekends!
The
film is now finished and we have produced a toolkit to go with it which will be
distributed to the Safer Sex projects 60+ community sites across the city, as
well as both city and county schools and colleges and will help to raise
awareness and educate young people in a really innovative and fun way! We are
also hoping to distribute this to parents with the aim opening up a dialogue
between young people and their parents on the issue of relationships and sex.
We
are privileged to have worked with Mike over the past year. He has spent a
great deal of time and effort making sure that the film looks and sounds just
right. In addition to doing the sound, filming and editing, he also created the
DVD cover and sticker designs, and even gave up his time to help us put them
all in the cases for our launch! He has absolutely gone the extra mile and we
are very grateful for all his hard work and commitment, to our project, and
more importantly his contribution towards improving young people’s sexual
health in Leicester city and Leicestershire County.
